Centering & Surface Condition Evaluated

To professional graders and high-end collectors, a card’s condition determines up to 90% of its ultimate financial value. Even a card with zero visible scratches or whitening can receive a surprisingly low grade if its centering is off. Learn exactly how grading agencies evaluate physical components.

1. Centering (The 50/50 Rule)

Centering evaluates how well-aligned the printed image is on the physical cardboard piece. It compares the thickness of the borders (top to bottom, left to right). To receive a perfect PSA 10, centering on the front must be approximately 55/45 to 50/50, and the back must be 75/25 or better.

2. Surface Defect Audit

Surface condition is often the hardest factor for amateur collectors to grade. Minor indentations, micro-scratches on holographic foils, printing lines, and fingerprints can only be observed under strong LED lighting and magnification (such as a 10x jeweler's loupe).

3. Corners and Edges

Check for "whitening," which occurs when the color layer on the edge or corner rubs off, exposing the white paper stock underneath. Sharp, crisp corners with zero whitening are mandatory for high-grade expectations.
